Recently, Environment and Climate Change Minister Bashir Mohamed Jama announced that Somalia’s federal government will significantly enhance its efforts in climate adaptation and environmental protection. This announcement follows a thorough evaluation mission to Galmudug state, which highlighted the increasing dangers facing local communities and infrastructure due to climate-related issues.
During his visit, Minister Jama toured several towns, including Hobyo and El-Buur. Local authorities shared concerns that climate fluctuations and environmental degradation are steadily undermining the livelihoods of people throughout central Somalia. In Hobyo, a coastal town, the minister witnessed firsthand the dire situation; neighborhoods are increasingly at risk from encroaching sand dunes that have buried homes and forced residents to abandon their properties. Local officials emphasized that this problem has intensified recently as a result of climate changes and the degradation of land quality.
